...uh, unless awk and Ghostscript are both found.

So this raises one new point and one old one.

GROFF_CHECK_GROPDF_PROGRAMS should be changed to set 'use_gropdf' to "yes" if
the URW fonts are found.  Actually that's a bad place to make that decision,
but as discussed before, the present of the URW fonts should resulted in
"enhanced mode" gropdf as you term it.  That's not happening now and I don't
think it ever has.

I'll try to come up with an Autoconf incantation for that.

The new point is that gropdf's awk dependency doesn't seem to be warranted? 
Nothing in font/devpdf or src/devices/gropdf mentions awk at all.

What does is pdfroff, over in contrib.

Deri, is it true that gropdf has no need of awk?  Since you write in Perl I
would guess it is the case.
