I've chatted a bit with Werner Lemberg, and provided a reference to a
book published in 1986 documenting \a in tables (Gehani, 'Document
Formatting and Typesetting on the UNIX System', Silicon Press, ISBN
0-9615336-0-9), and he found a second reference to it in an O'Reilly
book, and has provided me with a fix which is in groff under CVS.
Using 'tbl -C' for compatibility gives me the leader characters;
'groff -C' provides the '-C' option to tbl as well a troff.
