Apologies for the delay responding.

I've got some homework to do to fix up the old code that uses % 
directly rather than \nP, but with \nP in place, it works fine.
(Self-defense - the code worked with troff and eroff in the late 80s 
and very early 90s.  Resuscitating the code a decade and a bit later 
found the problem.)
