I found the answer to my question at http://lists.rpm.org/pipermail/rpm-list/2008-November/000020.html The solution is to use the file .rpmmacros rather than .rpmrc. That file should contain the lines %_topdir %(echo $HOME)/whatyouwant %_srcrpmdir %{_topdir}/<WHATYOUWANT> the default is SRPMS Tim
