ops, not really, only did 'make && make install'. now i did
cd lisp; make recompile; cd .. ; make ; make install
it seems to make difference, now emacs starts
[adam@pepsi tmp]$ /usr/local/emacs21/bin/emacs

however, display is still messed up (unlike emacs20)
