M-x compile gets progressively slower when using emacs with gdb |

emacs-version:
GNU Emacs 20.7.1 (i386-redhat-linux-gnu, X toolkit) of Thu Aug 24 2000 on
porky.devel.redhat.com
included in redhat linux 7.0
Symptom: When using gdb in one buffer and compiling code in another with the
M-x compile command, it takes M-x compile progressively longer to display the
actual compile-command in the minibuffer window. This starts to become
noticable after I go through the cycle of recompiling and running the c++
program in gdb about 5 times. I can reproduce this behavior with emacs started
with the -q option, i.e. without my .emacs file. This doesn't occur in emacs
version
GNU Emacs 20.4.1 (sparc-sun-solaris2.8, X toolkit) of Thu Nov 25 1999 on yavin
run on Solaris 8.
Thanks,
nick
