Hello Arnold,

I agree that they are older versions. We are deploying software in a Bell
Canada production environment and we have a server that was deployed in 2012
that is running RHEL 5.8 and one deployed this year running 6.5. Red Hat tends
to patch older versions rather than updating, and Bell has not, as far as I
know, deployed any RHEL 7 servers yet.

I'll try the locale change when I can get a window. The environment is running
a number of Tivoli applications (Workload Scheduler, DataStage...) that are
also locale sensitive so I'll see how it works out. There are some limitations
on what I can change as we are trying to match an existing server (yes, trying
to make a RHEL 6.5 server match a RHEL 5.8 server, we already had some issues
with postfix). I'll let you know the results but it will probably be after the
holidays.

Thanks very much for the reply, gnu software is always better than the
alternatives,

Hi.

I suspect that you are encountering a locale issue. Gawk became more locale
aware, particularly for multibyte locales, during the time those versions were
developed.

Both of them are quite old; 3.1.5 is from 2005 (!) and 3.1.7 is from 2009.
The current version is 4.1.1.

If you try running on the new server with

        export LC_ALL=C

does that fix your problem?

Thanks,

Arnold
