The master copy recenly moved from Autoconf to Automake.

There is never word splitting in assignments, so that's really useless.
Agreed. That was in the install-sh version that was in gnulib that I
started with. I didn't try to remove any useless quotes. I can do that
if you'd like.
There are quite a few things about this shell script that I find less
than optimal -- indenting by tabbing, using [ ... ] instead of test, and
so on. However, I figured the main point to start with should be to get
the functionality the same in the different versions.
Heck, it doesn't even support --help/--version. Or have a version
number.
