Thanks for checking.  I've tried exactly your command and same problem
as soon as I do C-c C-n.

Have toyed with this but ran out of time, and wasn't quite sure if this
local install would interfere with my system install. Sorry. 

Perhaps it is a Debian problem.  I'll try testing some more to see if I
can pinpoint the problem.
