I cannot reproduce this with
Emacs : GNU Emacs 22.0.91.1 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.8.20)
of 2006-11-25 on neutrino
Package: 11.83
i.e. a vanilla Emacs straight from CVS and using
emacs -Q -eval '(load "auctex.el" nil t t)' file.tex
as the command line for starting Emacs.
Perhaps this is a problem specific to the Debian version of Emacs?
Can you reproduce the problem with
1) the command line I've been using or
2) a build straight from CVS?
