No, I don't think so. I didn't encounter the problem at more places,
and even now after I reopened the file and regenerated the preview, it
does no longer occurr. Now the umlaut is:

  character: ä (04344, 2276, 0x8e4)
    charset: latin-iso8859-1 (Right-Hand Part of Latin Alphabet 1 (ISO/IEC
8859-1): ISO-IR-100)
 code point: 100
     syntax: word
   category: l:Latin
buffer code: 0x81 0xE4
file code: E4 (encoded by coding system iso-latin-1-unix)
       font: -Adobe-Courier-Medium-R-Normal--17-120-100-100-M-100-ISO8859-1

and I didn't do anything encoding-specific; I also had no problems
running LaTeX although I use [latin1]{inputenc}. When the problem did
occur, it was reproducible, i.e. it occurred again after I C-c C-p C-c
C-b.

I think I should stick to the Debian version currently.

Thank you,
Frank
