Bah!, as they say--that's what happens when you rush things.  The fix is to delete the line, but I just committed the fix.

I committed the unused variable patch and also stuck the source code location ./configure option back in:
./configure --with-apl-source-dir=/home/moller/personal/tinkering/gnuapl/trunk/src
