I see you couldn't resist fixing other things :-)
Note that Makefile.linux is an output file and the change
really has to be applied to Makefile.pamphlet for it to be
permanent. 

I applied the patch and I'm going to try the same patch cycle as you did
and see if I can also make it work.

I didn't try the tla star-merge you suggested (yet).
I'll try that change in the future.
