The DonTronics stuff is very good. The PCBs are well made, and they
are documented sufficiently to easily get working (sometimes you have
to do a little leg work keeping track of the different web pages and
such).
I use three bas boards myself, one 1200-based serial programmer which
can program the other two boards with pretty much anything on them (I
have a Mac, no parallel port, so I need the serial interface).
I'll probably bring it up with the free basic compiler he references
from his site, just to be sure it works as expected, then shift over
to the avr-gcc, which I have not yet tried to use.
You shouldn't have any real problems.
