Fwiw, Netatalk sources a file containing the version info:
$ cat VERSION
3.1.7dev$
configure.ac:
NETATALK_VERSION=`cat $srcdir/VERSION`
AC_SUBST(NETATALK_VERSION)
AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE(netatalk, ${NETATALK_VERSION})
