Sorry for the late answer, but I'm experiencing some hardware
problems :-(
Future answers (for some time at least) might be late for the same
reason.

Pardon my ignornance, but why is thi needed?  The patch works correctly
even without such help from autoconf.  Or would that be "just" an
optimization?

Yes, these are pretty much all the extra macros aclocal and automake
will trace after my patches are applied.
