and some people prefer to just look at what's important.

fwiw, I add a "--disable-echo" to any interesting (non-trivial) configure
script.  "make -n" always works (for any properly-constructed makefile).

afterthought: Not that it works well with libtool - its notion of verbose
and quiet is haphazard.
