Unfortunately, that's not the way people had understood the feature up
to now.  That's why there is so much confusion in this area, and
that's why we recommend some clear definition of was MACHTYPE means
here (or better, its removal).  I'm fine with keeping it as a synonym
of --build, but be aware that keeping an interface with a different
meaning is probably not as sane as completely deprecating the
interface.

reflects old versions of the GCS and other files (see the dates
below).  Only the tarball is up to date.  This can be a problem since
several of us do use the directory as the master source of these
