Well, I have at least a good working knowledge of Lisp, and %t as a
Lisp expression has quite the same meaning as !$^%& has (an undefined
symbol).  So from the view of the Lisp interpreter, Ralf is calling a
spade a spade here.

Maybe the doc string was misleading you, but most doc strings are
intended to be interpreted by people with basic Lisp knowledge, so I
am not sure whether we can, with reasonable effort, improve the
situation so that others in the same situation as you won't make the
same mistake.
