+te delen en de vrijheid van samenwerking met onze gemeenschap middels het
+verbeteren van computerprogramma's. Deze kennis over Swathanthra Software <a
+href="#swathanthra">(1)</a> hebben we opgedaan bij de bijeenkomsten van de
+<a
+href="https://web.archive.org/web/20160621163732/http://www.ilug-cochin.org/";>
+Indiase Libre Gebruikersgroep (ILUG-Cochin)</a> in het nabijgelegen
+Kochi. Door deze bijeenkomsten bij te wonen konden we nauw samenwerken met
+de Vrije Software-gemeenschap.</p>
+
+<h3>Hoe we dit voor elkaar kregen</h3>
+
+<p>De omschakeling naar Vrije Software in onze school was het resultaat van <a
+href="https://www.itschool.gov.in/";>address@hidden</a>, een project ontworpen
en
+opgericht door de Overheid van Kerala. Het project, opgestart in 2001,
+betrok enkele duizenden scholen in Kerala en schakelde in 2006 helemaal over
+naar Vrije Software.</p>
+

+<p>Opleidingscursussen voor leraren werden door de overheid opgestart om ons de
+basis aan te leren van het nieuwe Vrije Besturingssysteem en hoe dit te
+installeren. Dit nieuwe systeem was voor het eerst aangepast door <a
+href="http://space-kerala.org/node/10/";>SPACE</a>, een agentschap uit Kerala
+dat het gebruik van Vrije Software promoot in de publieke en private
+sector. SPACE, evenals plaatselijke Swathanthra Software gebruikersgroepen,
+speelden een fundamentele rol tijdens het proces door voortdurend
+ondersteuning aan leraren te leveren. Een van de door SPACE georganiseerde
+workshops hielp ons de website van onze school te bouwen met behulp van
+Vrije Software.</p>
+
+<p>Opleidingen waren niet enkel gericht op software, maar ook op het aanleren
+van de beginselen van hardware-onderhoud aan leraren en leerlingen. In onze
+school weten 10-jarige leerlingen hoe een pc samen te stellen.</p>
+
+<p>Het gebruik van Vrije programma's in het klaslokaal werd vergemakkelijkt
+door de invoering van opleidingsmodules die erop gericht waren het gebruik
+van bepaalde programma's aan te leren aan de leraren voor het onderwijzen
+van velerlei onderwerpen. Zo was er een opleidingsmodule voor leraren
+wiskunde over hoe <a href="http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Dr._geo";>Dr Geo</a>
+te gebruiken om meetkunde te onderwijzen, een andere voor leraren chemie
+over hoe organische molecules te tekenen gebruikmakend van <a
+href="http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Chemtool";>Chemtool</a>, en nog vele
+anderen.</p>
+
+<p>Andere opleidingsactiviteiten werden gezamenlijk georganiseerd door de
+school en ILUG-Cochin om ons het gebruik van verschillende Vrije
+Software-programma's aan te leren, zoals Blender, Inkscape, en de
+opdrachtregelinterface.</p>
+
+<p>De school heeft ook een <a
+href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Relay_Chat";>IRC</a>-kanaal
+geopend waar leerlingen vragen kunnen stellen over mogelijke problemen die
+ze tegenkomen.</p>
+
+<h3>Toewijding aan Vrije Software</h3>
+
+<p>Aanvankelijk werd het nieuwe systeem gebruikt in een dual-boot-formule omdat
+wij leraren nog niet bekend waren met Vrije Software, maar al snel raakten
+we er uitvoerig aan gewend. Tegenwoordig zijn er geen niet-vrije systemen
+meer geïnstalleerd in onze computers en worden er geen niet-vrije
+programma's meer gebruikt. In de klaslokalen en de secretariaten wordt enkel
+nog Vrije Software gebruikt.</p>
+
+<p>We gebruiken een uitgebreid gamma aan vrije programma's in het klaslokaal,
+zoals <a href= "http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/GIMP/";>GIMP</a>, <a href=
+"http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/TuxPaint";>Tux Paint</a>, <a
+href="http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Audacity";>Audacity</a>, <a
+href="http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/GPeriodic";>GPeriodic</a> en <a
+href="http://www.libreoffice.org/";>LibreOffice</a>, maar er zijn nog vele
+anderen.</p>
+
+<p>Leerlingen worden ook voorgesteld aan de programmeertaal Python vanaf groep
+8 (13 jaar oud).</p>
+
+<h3>Resultaten</h3>

+<p>Onderwijs in de staat Kerala wordt mogelijk gemaakt door IT. Dit betekent
+dat leerlingen directe technologiekennis opdoen tijdens lessen van het
+reguliere curriculum buiten het IT Labo. Dit is mogelijk dankzij de vele
+onderwijsprogramma's van hoge kwaliteit beschikbaar in GNU/Linux.</p>
+
+<p>De nadruk op transparantie en samenwerking door Vrije Software hielp
+leerlingen en leraren om zich in technologie vast te bijten en zorgde ervoor
+dat zij op verschillende manieren konden bijdragen aan de gemeenschap. Een
+belangrijke bijdrage was de vertaling van de <a
+href="/education/edu-software-tuxpaint.html">Tux Paint</a> interface in
+Malayalam, onze moedertaal.</p>
+
+<p>Een andere bijdrage was de aanmaak van nieuwe stempels in TuxPaint. Inheemse
+bloemen werden gefotografeerd en vervolgens werden de afbeeldingen bewerkt
+door leerlingen van groepen 6 en 7 door middel van GIMP, het programma voor
+afbeeldingsbewerking. De uiteindelijke afbeeldingen werden daarna
+geïntegreerd in TuxPaint met de naam van de bloemen geschreven in
+Malayalam. Als bonus namen de studenten met hun eigen stem de namen van de
+bloemen op, zodat wanneer de gebruiker één van de stempels selecteert, hij
+de namen van de bloemen in Malayalam te horen krijgt. Een video werd
+opgenomen om te tonen hoe het werkt en tot stand gekomen is.</p>

+<p>Beide activiteiten werden gepromoot door Swathanthra Software Koottayma van
+VHSS Irimpanam <a href="http://sskvhssirimpanam.wordpress.com/";> (SSK VHSS
+Irimpanam)</a>, een Vrije Software-groep van leraren en leerlingen op
+school. Hun doel is om bewustzijn te creëren inzake de filosofie van Vrije
+Software en om nieuwe programma's in GNU/Linux voor te stellen als manier om
+bij te dragen aan de gemeenschap. De groep organiseert maandelijkse
+bijeenkomsten en allerlei andere activiteiten om haar leden aan te moedigen
+tot experimenteren en verkennen van Vrije Software zodat ze de vrijheden die
+ze onderschrijft ook in de praktijk kan brengen.</p>

+<p>Als manier om in contact te blijven en ervaringen te delen met andere
+scholen en met de Vrije Software-gemeenschap, nemen leraren en leerlingen
+elk jaar deel aan evenementen zoals de Nationale Vrije Software Conferentie
+en de Cyberveiligheidsdag.</p>

+<h2>Vocational Higher Secondary School Irimpanam</h2>
+
+<p>The following report is based on information provided to us by the
+school's staff.</p>
+

+<h3>Location</h3>
+
+<p>The school is located in Irimpanam, an area close to the city of
+Tripunithura, in the Ernakulam district of the
+<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerala#Education";> State of
+Kerala</a>, India.</p>
+
+<h3>About</h3>
+
+<p>Founded in 1940, the <!--a href="http://vhssirimpanam.org/"-->Vocational
+Higher Secondary School Irimpanam<!--/a--> is a privately owned school aided
+by the State. It offers instruction from Upper Primary to High School
+levels (grades 5 to 7 and 8 to 10 respectively). Nearly 1,000 students
+from 10 to 15 years old attend the school.</p>
+
+<h3>Motivation</h3>
+
+<p>Our institution took special interest in promoting the main aspects
+of the philosophy of the GNU Project, such as the freedom to share
+knowledge and the freedom to cooperate with our community by
+contributing improvements to computer programs. This awareness about
+Swathanthra Software <a href="#swathanthra">(1)</a> was largely the
+result of what we learned at the meetings organized by the
+<a
href="https://web.archive.org/web/20160621163732/http://www.ilug-cochin.org/";>
Indian Libre User Group
+(ILUG-Cochin)</a> in the nearby city of Kochi. Attending those meetings
+also helped us to work in close connection with the Free Software
+community.</p>
+
+<h3>How We Did It</h3>
+
+<p>The migration to Free Software in our school was the result of a
+project designed and established by the Government of Kerala, called
+<a href="https://www.itschool.gov.in/";>address@hidden</a>. The project,
+started in 2001, involved several thousand schools in Kerala and in 2006
+it switched completely to Free Software.</p>
+

+<p>Training courses for teachers were implemented by the government to
+teach us the basics of the new Free Operating System and how to
+install it. The new system was customized for the first time by
+<a href="http://space-kerala.org/node/10/";>SPACE</a>, an agency based in
+Kerala that promotes the use of Free Software in the private and public
+sectors. SPACE, as well as local Swathanthra Software users groups,
+played a fundamental role during the process by providing constant
+support to teachers. One of the workshops organized by SPACE helped us
+to build the website of our school using Free Software.</p>
+
+<p>Training was not limited to software, it also included teaching the
+basics of hardware maintenance to teachers and students. In our school,
+10 years old students know how to assemble a PC.</p>
+
+<p>The use of Free programs in the classroom was facilitated by the
+implementation of training modules aimed at instructing teachers on the
+use of specific programs for teaching various subjects.
+For example, there was a training module for teachers of Mathematics on
+how to use <a href="http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Dr._geo";>Dr Geo</a>
+for teaching geometry, another one for teachers of Chemistry on how to
+draw organic molecules using
+<a href="http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Chemtool";>Chemtool</a>, and
+many others.</p>
+
+<p>Other training activities were conducted jointly by the school and
+ILUG-Cochin to teach us the use of different Free Software applications
+such as Blender, Inkscape, and the command line interface.</p>
+
+<p>The school has also opened an
+<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Relay_Chat";>IRC</a>
+channel where students can ask questions about issues they may encounter.</p>
+
+<h3>Commitment to Free Software</h3>
+
+<p>At the beginning the new system was used on a dual-boot basis,
+because we teachers were not familiar with Free Software, but we
+soon got acquainted with it to a great extent. At present, no
+proprietary systems are installed in any of our computers and no
+proprietary programs are being used. Only Free Software is being used in
+the classroom and in the administration offices.</p>
+
+<p>We use a wide range of free programs in the classroom, such as
+<a href= "http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/GIMP/";>GIMP</a>,
+<a href= "http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/TuxPaint";>Tux Paint</a>,
+<a href="http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Audacity";>Audacity</a>,
+<a href="http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/GPeriodic";>GPeriodic</a> and
+<a href="http://www.libreoffice.org/";>LibreOffice</a>,
+but there are many others.</p>
+
+<p>Students are also introduced to the programming language Python as
+from grade 8 (13 years old).</p>
+
+<h3>Results</h3>

+<p>Education in the State of Kerala has become "IT-enabled", meaning
+that students are getting first hand technology knowledge while learning
+regular curriculum subjects outside the IT Lab. This is possible due to
+the large number of high quality educational applications available in
+GNU/Linux.</p>
+
+<p>The transparency and the cooperative method of Free Software helped
+students and teachers to dive deep into technology and made them capable
+of contributing to the community in various ways. One important
+contribution was the localization of the interface of
+<a href="/education/edu-software-tuxpaint.html">Tux Paint</a> in
+Malayalam, our mother tongue.</p>
+
+<p>Another contribution was the addition of new stamps in TuxPaint. Native
+flowers were photographed and the pictures edited by 6th and 7th grade
students
+using the image editing program GIMP. The resulting images were then
integrated
+in TuxPaint with the name of the flowers written in Malayalam. As a plus,
+students recorded with their own voices the name of the flowers, so when the
+user selects one of the stamps, she will hear the name of the flower in
+Malayalam. A video was recorded to illustrate how it works and how the
activity

+<p>Both activities were promoted by Swathanthra Software Koottayma of
+VHSS Irimpanam <a href="http://sskvhssirimpanam.wordpress.com/";>
+(SSK VHSS Irimpanam)</a>, a Free Software group of teachers and students
+based on the school. Its aim is to build awareness on the philosophy of
+Free Software and to introduce new applications in GNU/Linux as a way of
