sed -i alternative

    I say "sed -i" can't be relied upon.

I agree that we shouldn't assume sed -i.

I don't have a strong opinion about using your sh function or perl
as an alternative.  Patrice, can you do one or the other (or something)?
I know I wouldn't be able to get to all the occurrences before I have to
quit today.
