Well, sending that support request did the trick because finally this
morning it all ran properly.
Your problems sound vaguely like the ones I've had with Cygwin on
Windows 7. Sometimes just re-installing it works.
Concerning getting started, tutorials, etc.: This is a big weakness of
Swarm (and other platforms).
One useful way to start is by building or reading the template models at:

after you digest the basics of Swarm in the User Guide:

But almost everyone now encourages beginners to look hard at NetLogo as
an alternative that is much easier to get started with. There's even an
extremely pleasant new book on modeling with NetLogo:
