OK, I'm experimenting and run into one problem. I was using Swarm's mode
argument to give a file name, and no matter what I do, Swarm disregards
the period and the suffix to the file name. It sees
./ex -m test.scm.gz
and the mode string is just "test".
Is that intended?

It's already required for Swarm. In the Red Hat zlib-devel package,
there's an example program.
e.g. on my Red Hat 7.2 system it's in:
/usr/share/doc/zlib-devel-1.1.3/example.c
