Oh yeah, I've seen that one before!  The wild part is that there can
be delay between the memory running out and fried global references
that result in crash symptoms like the swarm_directory_objc_remove you saw.
And it isn't a leak of JVM global references, per se, it is just the fact
you're running out of memory. 

It's handy to have a setup for Sun JDK and Kaffe (variant javaswarm
scripts) when mysterious JVM behavior may be lurking.  For example, the
behavior you describe I've only ever seen with Sun JDK.
