The best thing is to avoid distribution of patches and get the
original fixed. For example, the dynamic type/size linker warning
problem in GCC is being covered over when the Linux distributors back
out correct changes in binutils in order to silence a reasonable warning.
My experience is that less trouble means more pain in the long run.
[Of course, there's a natural tendency to endure a small amount of pain
over a long period of time rather than a large amount of pain at one
shot, even if the total amount is much more in the former case.]
