[snip] I think for now slinky doesn't need OS detection - before that it must be able to use other partitions than the default /dev/hda[1-3]. If there already is a Windows it'll sit in /dev/hda1 and maybe /dev/hda5.
My $.02: we will often need to differentiate between priorities. OS detection would be a great thing, but it's already been noted that the majority of our users will not need this. Hence, OS detection does not belong with the "must have" features that right now are our priority, but rather with the "it would be great if we could do this" features that will come somewhat later.
Network installs with slinky, full functionality and development, multiple language translations, and decent documentation (to buck the Linux trend) all come before OS detection in my book. Giving the user the ability to boot another OS which is already in /dev/hdaX is good enough for now.
