I got precisely this when using an old version of ratpoison to send
commands to a new version of ratpoison.  If the Emacs script shells out
to ratpoison to send the commands, this could be what's affecting you;
if it makes X requests directly it will presumably need to be adapted to
match whatever changed in ratpoison.
