Sorry, this works normally for me. Here's what I see with grep: 
newsgroups.xov:gmane.comp.video.transcode.user 20777 20776 1:20852

Do you have the same entries in your ~/.pan2 for that group?

Yes, that one I see in pan 0.132.  Evidently Charles doesn't consider the
group is 'selected' just because its headers are still displayed in the 
header pane.  Anything which causes the group name to disappear from the
group pane will de-select it.

E.g. type 'wallpaper' in the group search box and then click on a.b.w. as
you suggested, then switch back to the group pane.  Now click on the 
twisty for 'Other Groups' to collapse the display.  When you click on the
twisty again to re-expand Other Groups, a.b.w. is no longer selected.

What you are saying is that the group should remain 'selected' until you
purposely click on a different group.

Can anyone see any problems with making that change?  Charles may have
done that to get rid of some other bug -- dunno.
