It was dormant for a long time, but it's picking up again.

No.
If so, are there other good newsreaders for linux that have
the same features as Pan whose development is still alive?
Not really. KLibido and KNode are both under active development,
and most of the classic console newsreaders are still chugging along,
but AFAIK there's not another GUI newsreader for Linux that straddles
both worlds of newsereading and binaries harvesting.
