Well actually that is what an rpm update actually does, an uninstall
followed by a reinstall of the package.
But you can have extra peace of mind by backing up your ~/.pan
directory, although the update process should not affect it, sometimes
some settings in the config.xml file can be affected or corrupted
slightly. This is pretty rare though.
