I, for one, would not appreciate such behavior; I think allowing me to
set several filters *before* applying changes would be a good idea.
Now, here's why.
If you have a custom filter (say, for Spam) with regular expressions
in it, this slows filtering way down. The more regexes you have, the
slower the filter becomes. My box is a dual-P3 at 800MHz, and I speak
from experience when I say that in a group with 100,000 articles it can
take almost a minute to apply my Spam filter (which has many regexes
and will have more complex ones as I get better at writing them) to
such a newsgroup. If I wanted to change filters in a new group, say
turn off all but complete binaries and apply a few regex filters, I
would not want to wait a minute for Pan to reorganize itself each time
I clicked; I'd rather have it all happen at once when I'm done.
Of course, we could both be satisfied if there were a checkbox on the
dialog to toggle this behavior, such as in The GIMP where some
(graphics) filters have "Preview" checkboxes. I would probably leave
my Preview checkbox turned off most of the time. :)
