The sample images were captured on Kodak 5245 motion picture negative
film, using a Canon A1 still camera. The negatives were scanned using
ILM's custom-built film scanner. Each image is a composite of three
to five separate exposures; the difference between successive exposures
was two f-stops. Registration and compositing were done with ILM's
in-house software.
This method is not necessarily the most convenient way to capture
high dynamic-range images (unless you happen to work at ILM), but
if you have a digital camera that lets you get at raw unprocessed
pixel data from the image sensor, you can produce high-quality images
by combining multiple exposures, using software such as Greg Ward's
Photosphere or Paul Debevec's HDRShop.
