Follow-up Comment #18, patch #8943 (project octave): Yet another issue: At least for my system GL_MAX_LIGHTS is way too high (>3000). Yet, I start receiving GL errors when I add more than 8 lights. I added a loop that tries how many lights can be disabled before GL-errors occur and stores that number in opengl_renderer::max_light.
