Follow-up Comment #4:

I pushed a changeset that allows 'tif' to work for saveas as print
(https://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/0df6454f58ea).  Because this is
a new feature, rather than a bug fix, it went on the development branch which
will be released as Octave 5.0.0 at the end of the year.

If you need the fix sooner you can just grab the .m files I modified from the
Mercurial web interface and put them in your local distribution.
