Follow-up Comment #1:

Do you have access to Matlab?  It would be useful to know if they accept the
shortened form 'tif'.  Their documentation doesn't suggest that (see
http://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/ref/saveas.html#buou9ii-formattype).

Certainly Octave should document more of the types that it can save data
under.
