Follow-up Comment #46, bug #47372 (project octave):

Finally, attached is my hack to disable dlclose on the GraphicsMagick library;
It stops the segfault for me.  Narrowing the bug down to this particular code
path has taken a very long time.  While the correct thing may be to go over to
the GraphicsMagick code and start hunting there, I don't have the energy or
time to learn someone else's code tree.  Unless someone wants to do that, or
there are great ructions about the "hackiness" of this patch, I will apply it
this weekend.
