Follow-up Comment #2, bug #42340 (project octave):
There should be a note about this in the documentation. Currently, the Tex
parser works for on-screen rendering, but not with the simple print output
formats.
Example:
clf;
text (0.5, 0.5, '\gamma');
print tst.pdf
The resulting PDF file has only 'gamma', rather than the gamma symbol. See
alsobug #42320.
