That's quite nice.  `#3' as in `number 3'.  And it's not a shell comment
character as it doesn't start a word.

    foo#3-5   Third, fourth, and fifth.
    foo#2--2   All but the first and last, potentially none.
    foo#-5--1   Same as foo:-5.
    foo#-5-3   Second and third if foo holds six.
