They were separate issues, FreeBSD/OSX didn't seem to have a problem
with LC_MESSAGES. Why the native versions of iconv/gettext can't be
found, I don't know. I looked a little further at FreeBSD, and they
are both the current GNU versions, installed in /usr/local - so should
be on the standard include/lib paths.

Anyhow, attached is the log for OSX, FreeBSD fails at exactly the same
point. Installing to a temp location was about the only thing that
worked.
