this is ironic, since at the same time I get email from someone reporting
a bug in mutt where it leaves black background (and blaming it on ncurses ;-)

-- slang simply assumes (ignores the terminal description) that when it
   clears the screen, or clears a line, the cleared area has the current
   background color.  This is not true of Tera Term.  If it "works" for
   you, it's only because your background in Lynx has the same color (iirc,
   you're using black) as the current background.
