you're now in luck: the problem has recently been solved by Kim DeVaughn!
goto sol.slcc.edu/lynx/current for the latest development version 17,
which allows you to call up an editor for a TEXTAREA.
a number of problems have been reported with version 17,
but the feature is now a permanent part of Lynx.
