horizontal galleys

Is it possible to use horizontal galleys in a non-recursive
fashion?  Nothing against recursion, but I think I would find it easier to
understand what they are doing by working through some non-recursive
examples.  Also, I noticed that the example in the 'expert' guide puts the
text to be promoted into a horizontal galley after one @ParPlace but
before a @LineList composed of @ParPlaces, even though it is defined as
into address@hidden&&preceding}.  How does this work?
