Aha--I would certainly have pressed the Minus key while testing numeric
data entry, so you've solved the Case of the Mysterious Messagebox.
I thought it was a dash with an empty string on each side, e.g.:
  printf '%s–%s' "This is a char*" "that got overwritten with nulls"
but it was really telling me exactly what I needed to know, kind of
like "pedo mellon a mino" on the Doors of Durin: type '-' and crash.
