This question is quite old, but today I found a piano score that has the
tuplet number on the opposite side of the stems:
Serge Rachmaninoff: Preludes for Piano
Authentic Edition, Boosey & Hawkes Music Publishers Ltd. (1992)
However, I do not like some of their engraving style decisions.
