My mistake -- you're completely correct. In the intervening week or so
since I wrote the original post I ran up against the fact that nearly
any amount of \markup in lily file will make Apple's pdf renderer
explode on the resulting .ps. If you have *no* \markup, then, by all
means, use Apple's pdf renderer; but for real work I'll definitely be
using ps2pdf's call to ghostscript.
So, please disregard my earlier observation about using Apple's pdf
renderer; bad suggestion.
On the other hand, the point about turning off point-and-click is
still a good one -- using -dno-point-and-click combined with lily's
default call to ghostscript works perfectly under OS X, including for
large, complex files with plenty of \markup.
