Simply because there are "simple" systems out there with only one
compiler, one ABI, one libtool.

This used to be rather common.  Still, on most modern systems there
could easily be identified a "common" set of those, pertaining to the
default one.

Oh no, your criticism is ok.  We ought to improve documentation on this
matter.
