Various bits and pieces, split into several logical changes.
OK to apply to HEAD and branch-2-0?

linelen: @example is indented automatically, no need to add here
(the TeX output looked esp. bad).  If you dislike the different
indentations of the different snippets, we should either move them to
the same logical level in the document or play with texinfo vars.
