Gnus hanging when fetching imap messages

Hi

this has been a bugbear of mine for some time. When I start gnus it
checks my gmail account (using imap) and successfully loads message
headers. If I use M-g some time later to get new messages, it all hangs
up. On NT Emacs it came back after a bit with an error message saying
Process IMAP not started.

Now I'm mainly running emacs on Ubuntu, it doesn't give me the
message, it just sits there. Eventually I get bored and C-g and go on
with my day. At some point later in the day it works fine - as if
something somewhere has timed out.

I tried to see if imap was throwing any errors using (setq imap-log t)
but all I get is one line: 158 NOOP


Is there anything else I can check? Any thoughts?
