gnus does not start

Hi all,

I have two emacs running (under Debian) - emacs-snapshot and one
compiled with xft support. With the latter I do not experience any
problem with gnus, but within emacs-snapshot gnus does not start.
Instead I get this error message:

attempted use of a nil select mode

As both use the same .gnus and the problem does appear with another
.gnus or none at all as well, I assume it must be a bug in emacs'
development version. Or any other suggestions?
