I should probably let those more qualified answer this question, but I'll
take a shot at describing the repository file format. First off, take a
look in the Cederqvist, I believe it discusses this topic.
If you take a look at a ,v file in a CVS repository, you'll see that it
consists of the following:
- a file header that lists the current revision number on the trunk, any
tags on the file with the corresponding revision numbers, and some
additional fields like access, lock, comment, etc. For example:
comment @# @;
- after this header is a section with a list of revision numbers, date and
time the revision was created, the author, and branches the revision's on
and a pointer to the prior revision. Eg.
date 2002.08.26.19.25.27; author jim; state Exp;
date 2001.10.31.17.42.42; author damian; state Exp;
date 2001.10.31.17.08.35; author sal; state Exp;
- after the list of revision information is a set of diffs plus comments.
IIRC, the first revision listed will contain the entire contents of the file
from the version on the trunk, while the following entries are all diffs.

When you checkout a specific revision, I believe CVS grabs the version from
the trunk and then uses the information at the beginning of the ,v file to
determine the order in which to apply diffs to generate the revision you
